Chêne Bleu Rouge Vieilles Vignes 2015
IN COLLABORATION WITH “SUPER-RHÔNE” PRODUCER CHÊNE BLEU
CHÊNE BLEU
Set in the southern Rhône, the Chêne Bleu estate, Domaine de la Verriere, enjoys a secluded position in the foothills of Mont Ventoux, Provence’s highest mountain. Since the first vintage in 2006, Chêne Bleu’s wines have received international acclaim but its unusually high altitude, distinctive geology and sometimes unconventional blends mean this southern Rhône estate’s wines remain outside the restrictive French appellation system.
PASSION & PERSISTENCE
Husband and wife team, Xavier and Nicole Rolet have restored this abandoned property, harnessing the unforgiving terrain and cool microclimate to produce refined and expressive southern Rhône red blends with a focus on Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
A group of the country’s most-respected wine experts including critic Michel Bettane and Châteauneuf-du-Pape mastermind Vincent Avril of Clos des Papes was invited to join the Chêne Bleu team to craft the finished wine with Thibault and his late father, Paul Pontallier.
UNIQUE PIECE OF ART
The final Pont des Arts cuvée provides a contrast to Chêne Bleu’s expression of its high-altitude vineyards, with a blend of Grenache (55%), Syrah (35%) and Mourvèdre (5%). The grapes are grown more than 500 metres above sea level on steep, rocky slopes, producing a red wine that is suave and elegant with refined tannins and a fine line of acidity.

THE EXPERIENCE
With uttermost awareness bordering on scientific austerity, Piet Mondrian encapsulates general beauty via masterful combinations of lines and primary colours. The rectangular forms, albeit on a flat surface that is the canvas, have been painted in layers using strokes in various directions, hence the sense of depth and volume. Endowed with a clear structure thanks to its rigorous winemaking process, this fine red from Rhône presents a plethora of elements in a way that is both meticulous and melodious, mirroring the essential qualities of the painting.
THE WINE
This bright ruby red wine is a blend of old vine Grenache and Syrah with a touch of Mourvèdre. Rich flavours and aromas of ripe black cherry and blackcurrant mingle with liquorice, hints of rosemary and black pepper. It has a lively acidity and minerality and a long elegant finish; the Chêne Bleu signatures which have won them international acclaim.

THE ART
Piet Mondrian
Tableau I with Black, Red, Yellow, Blue and Light Blue – 1921
Oil on Canvas – 96.5 x 60.5 cm
During the course of WWI, Piet Mondrian was effectively stranded in his native Netherlands, where he attempted to reconcile his paintings with spiritual pursuits, notably influenced by Helena Bla- vatsky’s theosophical movement. It was at once his the final break from representational painting, as well as the birth of De Stijl. Embracing pure abstraction, he began to produce grid-based paintings in 1919, and found his definitive style in 1920. Completed in 1921, this painting is one of Piet Mondrian’s iconic works in interwar Paris.
