THE EXPERIENCE
Corresponding to the mighty Gevrey-Chambertin of Côte-de-Nuits is Pommard of Côte-de-Beaune, both revered for producing the most commanding and masculine style of red Burgundy. As the visual counterpart of this premier cru gem, this masterpiece embodies Parnassian allure and charisma. Aesthetically adventurous throughout his life, at the age of 64, Zao Wou-Ki employed Western oil and canvas to simulate the sensibilities of Chinese ink on paper. Seamlessly combining elegance and power, this premier cru Pommard reflects Zao Wou-Ki’s singular virtuosity in uniting Chinese and French artistic traditions.
THE WINE
Pommard has the reputation of being a very strong wine; however, the diverse “terroirs” offer a great sensibility to this wine. Victor Hugo described its dark purple robe as a constant struggle between day and night. With its aromas of berries, cherry pit and ripeplum, it evolves towards a more feline and wild palette. The matured fragrance has hints of leather, chocolate, truffle and pepper.

Armed with a broad poem landscape composition and the hazy light typical of ocean scenery, the painting 04.04.85 is filled with poetic charm. Zao Wou-Ki uses his traditional Western technique of oil but with a new aesthetic research: the artist wants to re-create the transparencies and dilutions of China ink, a technique he resumed since the beginning of the 70s.
