Grand Vin De Bourgogne
CÔTE DE NUITS-VILLAGES 2011
THE EXPERIENCE
Illustrious names such as Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny instantly evoke admiration and adulation, but the sacrament of matrimony calls not for passion, but devotion, one that is as enduring and unassuming as a constant stream. Dedicated to his wife Françoise Marquet, who survived him, Zao Wou-Ki was perhaps at his tenderest and in creating this composition, returning to the age-old symbolism of red in Chinese culture. Mirroring this touching painting is not the rarest of vinous scents, but the dense fruitiness and fresh minearlity that one associate with an outstanding Burgundy regardless of its exact appellation.
THE WINE
The Côte de Nuits “terroir” is well known for the purity of its limestone and is widely considered the home of Pinot Noir in Burgundy. The brilliance of this wine is a good indicator of its acidity and structure. The wine has a particularly fragrant bouquet, with a charming balance of red fruits and warm spices. It is simultaneously powerful, complex and delightfully elegant.

THE ART
Collection 2011: Homage to Françoise – 23.10.2003
Triptych, Oil on canvas – 195 x 324 cm – Private collection
Zao Wou-Ki has created a number of paintings as tribute to friends, whether painters or poets. There is, in addition, a more intimate series of paintings dedicated to members of his family, such as his second wife Chan May-Kan, his brother Zao Wu-Wei. This fine composition, in the form of a triptych, pays homage to Françoise Marquet, his wife since 1977.
