CHAMBOLLE – MUSIGNY 2011

THE EXPERIENCE

Chambolle-Musigny is renowned for its beguiling perfume and caressing tenderness, as mirrored by the remarkable delicacy of Miquel Barceló’s composition. Yet the wine has much more to offer by way of intricacy and substance, for the internal tension amongst its phenolics is as subtle as the visually opposing elements of lightness and darkness. As is often the case, perfection is usually achieved on a knife’s edge of extremes.

THE WINE

Sandwiched between the prestigious appellations of Morey-Saint-Denis and Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny is the undisputed queen of Côte-de-Nuits, renowned for its singularly elegant wines, in no small part thanks to its terroir of active chalk and low clay. Displaying a gorgeous ruby colour, this wine has bursting aromas of black cherries, spices and violet. Well-balanced with velvety tannins and a lingering aftertaste, this is a seducer of a Pinot Noir.

THE ART

The interplay between darkness and lightness is intriguing, if counterintuitive, for it is often in intense obscurity that a silver lining appears the brightest. In this multi-coloured painting seemingly depicting a cave, Miquel Barceló travels great distances in search of light in a mysterious cave setting, evoking a sense of excavation and exploration, as much as contemplation and reflection.
