THE EXPERIENCE

In 1948, the young Zao Wou-Ki arrived in Paris. France would become his adopted country for the largest part of his life. Youthful, promising and ambitious, he made a statement by using oil and canvas to depict a Parisian landmark in European style, a far cry from his hitherto Chinese upbringing. As earnest as his effort is this Côte-de-Nuits-Villages, a candid and sprightly representation of Burgundian Pinot Noir effusing forest berries and red fruits. This is where the Pont des Arts experience of Zao Wou-Ki and red Burgundy begins.

THE WINE

The Côte de Nuits “terroir” is well known for the purity of its limestone and is widely considered the home of Pinot Noir in Burgundy. The brilliance of this wine is a good indicator of its acidity and structure. The wine has a particularly fragrant bouquet, with a charming balance of red fruits and warm spices. It is simultaneously powerful, complex and delightfully elegant.

This work, executed in 1948 upon his arrival in Paris, is for Zao Wou-Ki some sort of manifesto: the choice of oil paint, the western theme of the church, the stylization of the trees, the fully saturated wide coloured areas.
