Grand Vin De Bordeaux

“RIVE DROITE” 2011

THE EXPERIENCE

Bordeaux’s Right Bank is the alias of Merlot, and vice versa. The most widely planted variety in Bordeaux, Merlot is able to stand on its own without drawing external support, thanks to its body and intensity. Parallel can be drawn to the age-old genre of Chinese landscape painting, which for centuries has steadfastly held its own as the preferred style of the literati. Bound by two traditions, Zao Wou-Ki was the first and so far only master-painter to reconcile the French and Chinese traditions, as reflected by this eclectic painting which simultaneously highlights the versatility of Merlot.

THE ART

Collection 2011: 31.01.2001 – 2001
Oil on canvas – 65 x 81 cm – Private collection

The audacious use of brilliant colours and spirited rhythm may not be typical of an octogenarian painter, but the contemporary master Zao Wou-Ki had by then transcended conventional artistic boundaries. During his life-long quest for light and space, he created this gallant and profound painting with the two elements intermingling in a blazing assumption of masses.
