Yue Minjun

AN ICON

THE ARTIST

YUE MINJUN is one of the most famous Chinese contemporary artists in the world. Based in Beijing, he is best known for oil paintings depicting himself in various settings frozen in laughter.

AVANT-GARDE

Yue Minjun’s work has been collected by many major Chinese and foreign art institutes, art galleries, and museums, where his sharp artistic features have been immensely valuable for Chinese contemporary art & culture’s presence on the world stage.

AN INFLUENCER

For his experience and artistic creations, Yue was featured in Time Magazine’s ‘People Who Mattered’ in 2007: ‘If the big-picture question of our time is what to make of China, this is the man to paint it’. The same year, Yue’s landmark work Execution became the most expensive work by a Chinese contemporary artist ever sold.

AN ICON

Though Yue Minjun is one of the most imitated artists in the world and tremendously successful on the art market, his works are rarely exhibited. In 2012, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain presented the first major exhibition dedicated to the artist in Europe – ‘L’Ombre du fou rire’ in Paris – featuring nearly 130 paintings and drawings.
