THE ARTIST

Born in Shanghai in 1960, Yan Pei-Ming lives and works in Dijon, Burgundy. At the age of 19, he left China for France. On graduating from École des Beaux-Arts de Dijon in 1986, Yan Pei-Ming encountered immediate success with his portraits.

A UNIQUE STYLE

Yan Pei-Ming famously uses a long, mop-sized brush to create his iconic images, working rapidly with wet-into-wet oil paint, using either a combination of white and black, or red and white paint.

AN ACCLAIMED WORK

In 2003, his acclaimed contribution to the Biennale of Venice established his work on the international scene. Six years later, his work was acquired by the Louvre where he exhibited a collection of portraits that sought to convey his personal perspective on Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.
