Grand Vin De Bourgogne

MAISON DE MONTILLE

Corton Grand Cru “Les Maréchaudes” 2014

THE EXPERIENCE

The sense of foreboding and sombre inevitability is reminiscent of asceticism and austerity, the same conditions which the Benedictines and Cistercians – who for centuries painstakingly studied and demarcated the numerous terroirs of Burgundy – imposed on themselves. If the length of time is but a perception of relativity, this Corton Grand Cru, in oenological terms, is as close to timelessness as it gets, with decades of cellaring ability ahead of it.

THE WINE

There are but 30-odd Grand Cru appellations in the entire Burgundy, and Corton is one of them, hence its rarity and prestige. Made in collaboration with one of Burgundy’s most revered wine makers, Etienne de Montille, this gem emanates haunting aromas of fresh cherries, crushed strawberries, violet and sous bois. Seamlessly combining invigorating fruits, a minerally structure and velvety tannins, this Grand Cru Corton is ultra-fine in texture from start to finish. Given time and patience, its gamey and leathery notes will develop into a bouquet filled with fur and truffle.

Serving temperature: 14°C to 16°C

Decant before serving

Drink now to 20 years

THE ART

Yan Pei-Ming, Raptor – 2011
Oil on Canvas – 97 x 195 cm

The iconic bird of prey is surrounded by an intensely gloomy atmosphere, as if existence is suffering, destiny is pre-determined and aggression is futile, that the aggressor per se is a victim, whether of external extremities or its own actions. The tragic qualities of Yan Pei Ming’s paintings come to the fore, inviting viewers to look beyond superficial images, in search of the truth that is the meaning of fate, life, war and violence.
